OUTSTANDING CONCEPT PRIZESmart communitiesRootrade is an online application where neighborhood residents can find and compare produce availability/costs between grocery stores and greenhouses nearby. The user can also register with their local greenhouse, connect with other members of their greenhouse, and become a part of a network of locally-grown produce trade. -

BEST CONTRIBUTION PRIZETransportationLocated in what was once a bustling industrial neighborhood without a name, Gorilla Park is a virtually unused lot situated just north of the Van Horne overpass in a section of Mile-Ex known as Marconi-Alexandra. The common thread of these proposals and interventions for Gorilla Park lie within the notion of mobility. -
Illuminated neighborhood
PEOPLE’S CHOICESmart communitiesThis project proposes that the City of Montreal’s Open Data initiative is used to construct educational data visualizations that urge residents to track their home energy use and to develop more sustainable habits. -
The smart bus stop
Smart communitiesMaking people aware of their daily carbon emissions from taking the car and how they can escape such emissions by taking the bus. Also comparing vehicles in a financial way to allow the audience to see how taking the bus can save them insurmountable dollars. -
Under artificial skies
Smart communitiesUnder Artificial Skies is a smart installation depicting the issue of light pollution and energy waste in Montreal. It is to be installed in the business district of Place Ville Marie, an area solely occupied by office and commercial spaces. Due to the lack of residential housing, there should be very little light during the night. The installation consists of an LED screen that is connected to a data set quantifying the amount of energy wasted overnight due to light pollution. The screen depicts a birds-eye-view of a heat map of downtown Montreal that will respond to the data, glowing brighter as the energy waste is increased. -
Tragic traffic
Smart communitiesThis project aimed to develop a motion detector that will be able to count the number of cars that pass everyday and have the ability to change the colour of the lights on the bridge in order to represent the damage cars cause to the city of Montreal and the Saint-Lawrence river. -
Trouble with takeout
Smart communitiesThis project aims to inform consumers on which restaurants and cafés near them have environmentally friendly packaging and which don’t. -
Accessible AQI
Smart communitiesAQI-Accessible stations are mobile structures that monitor and display air quality data in an understandable and readily available format for the people of Montreal. -
The power in the reversibility of light pollution
Smart communitiesLight pollution is the excessive and unnecessary use of artificial lights, leading to negative effects on humans and wildlife alike. This is an issue that is especially prominent in the city of Montreal and the metropolitan area as shown in light pollution heat maps that show the general areas of high and low pollution. -
Late again?
Smart communitiesEver wonder why your bus is always delayed? Can this be normal? Our goal is to increase efficiency in public transportation in Montreal from the ground up. Access to a knowledge of patterns in delay trends could greatly improve efficiency, and positively impact the community. -

In developing the projects, students have examining relationships between public services and Indigenous communities, promoting, recognizing and involving Indigenous knowledges in the city. This map is intended to highlight locations offering services which may be of interest to Indigenous people. -
Montreal Tree Portraits
Urban ForestsMontreal Tree Portraits is the result of a collaboration between two Moving Image classes in Communication Studies at Concordia University and the Park Management and Biodiversity Department of the Service des grands parcs, du Mont-Royal et des sports of the City of Montreal.
